<image:title>3 steps to knowing yourself - Habit Hacking</image:title>
<image:caption>Habits control us. Habits influence our every thought, word and action. Habits can even predict our exact geographical location 93% of the time! Step 1 in knowing yourself is understanding how habits work, identifying the habits at work in our own lives, and choosing one habit that you will stop or start during the workshop. First, we mould our habits, then our habits mould us.</image:caption>

<image:title>3 steps to knowing yourself - Iki-Guide</image:title>
<image:caption>Pythagoras taught us that when we "Know ourselves, we will know the Universe and God." Buddha taught us that it is "Better to conquer ourselves than to conquer others." Ancient wisdom, but far out of reach in modern times. Our world is accelerating. So much is going on around us, and there is precious little time & space to slow down, take a breath, and hear that quiet voice within. Understanding ourselves is invaluable, as the ancient philosophers remind us, but it's near impossible in the turbulence of modern times. Sam offers people time & space to better understand themselves using the Japanese concept of Ikigai - ancient wisdom for the modern time.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Variety is the spice of life, but sometimes we get weighed down by the competing demands of family, work, study, hobbies, global citizenship and self-care. Maintaining balance is essential, as is prioritising the various hats that we wear. Sam draws on his experience as a clown to teach the skill of juggling, before using the skill to illustrate tips & tricks for living a rich and varied life in a way that is both balanced and sustainable.</image:caption>

<image:title>3 steps to growing yourself - Climbing Mountains</image:title>
<image:caption>"It is not the mountain that we conquer, but ourselves", said Sir Edmund Hilary. Wise words, but all I could think to myself was "Stay awake." We had been walking for 9-hours through blanket snow under a full moon. I had vomited more than 20 times at this point (altitude can surprise the body) but the mountain guides (whose expertise and judgement was always superb) gently encouraged me on. Around me, there is a small family of newly formed friends who are leaning on each other, both mentally and physically. "Pole pole" is the mantra (Swahili for "slowly slowly"). One step at a time, we can scarcely imagine the summit. As this keynote will make clear, climbing mountains is about taking it slow, getting up after falling down, conquering the self-defeating voices inside of us, and savouring the journey as well as the destination.</image:caption>

<image:title>3 steps to growing yourself - Clowning Around</image:title>
<image:caption>Clowns frighten the hell out of some people (maybe it's the white face paint and masks...not to mention the 'IT' movie). But what scared about clowns me more than face paint was the idea of being a clown. Imagine dressing up in that ridiculous garb, being responsible for eliciting joy and laughter in others, the expectation that a clown can perform tricks and stunts on demand, and doing it all for the first time with people I had never met and in a foreign country - and in Russia of all places! The idea first came when I got a letter from Patch Adams (the original clown doctor), after writing to him about how he uses humour in medical practice. Patch invited me to join him and a troupe of 30 humanitarian clowns (hailing from 10 countries) on their 32nd annual clowning tour of Russia. I hesitated, and at 3am one morning (a time when all good ideas appear) embraced the uncertainty and booked my ticket. What came next was a colourful and unexpected journey that taught me to embrace uncertainty, experiment continually, bounce back from failure, and marvel at the kindness of strangers.</image:caption>

<image:title>3 steps to growing yourself - (Good) Social Media</image:title>
<image:caption>What if social media could make us better people? That's the question that sparked Crane Blog. Sam folded one thousand origami cranes and spontaneously gives them to people who have done good things in everyday life. Each story is shared on Facebook and Instagram via Crane Blog, along with a photo of each crane. Sam uses Crane Blog to demonstrate how being proactive, reactive and inactive on social media can all be methods for making this world a better place.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Life is a game...and age is one way of keeping score. Scientists and alchemists are yet to discover the elixir of eternal youth (and Nicholas Flamel destroyed the philosopher's stone), but there remains a bucketload of evidence indicating that particular habits and lifestyle practices can keep us healthy and happy long into our later years. Aging is inevitable. Growing old is optional. This workshop is designed for older adults who are keen launch into the art of ageing well (games, laughter and creativity) and science of staying young (neuroscience, psychology and population studies).</image:caption>

<image:title>3 steps to moving yourself - Injury Prevention</image:title>
<image:caption>Bruce Lee made it famous, but nature made it obvious. We must be "shapeless, formless, like water" if we are to adapt with and endure the ebbs and flow of life. "When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup", Bruce continues as he illustrates the contextual adaptability of water. "Water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend." The adaptability, power and tranquillity of water models how we may become more resilient, and less prone to injury. Mixing it up, changing it up, and keeping it up are the foundations of injury prevention. Sam combines his physio experience with the habit-building principles from his Habit Hacking workshop to offer simple take-homes for people of all ages and backgrounds.</image:caption>

<image:title>3 steps to wonder women - Wonder Women</image:title>
<image:caption>Keeping Our Girls On The Field Young girls & women are taking to the footy field to play AFL in record-breaking numbers, but the risk (and reality) of season-ending injuries threatens to sideline many. Young women are 2-10x more likely to sustain an ACL rupture (a 12- to 18-month injury) compared to their male counterparts. A case in point is the recent AFLW season where 5 ACL ruptures occurred within 2-weeks of competition. Young girls & women are subject to 4 main risk factors: anatomy, biomechanics, hormones and opportunity. Only 2 of these factors are modifiable - biomechanics & opportunity. Biomechanics considers how we move, and how we cope with various forces. Opportunity is the time & space to practice AFL-specific drills, training & competition that increase familiarity with the sport. Sam works with high-school P.E. teachers and local-level football coaches to teach their students/athletes how to best their chances of staying on the field. </image:caption>
